8 Common Painting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
The mistakes DIYers make most often and what to do instead.
After painting hundreds of rooms, we've seen every mistake in the book. Here are the ones that happen most often.
1. Skipping the Prep
The problem: People are excited to see color on the walls, so they skip cleaning, sanding, and priming.
The fix: Spend the time on prep. It's boring, but it's the difference between a 2-year paint job and a 10-year paint job.
2. Buying Cheap Paint
The problem: Budget paint needs more coats, doesn't cover as well, and doesn't last.
The fix: Buy the best paint you can afford. You'll use less of it and it will look better longer.
3. Wrong Sheen for the Room
The problem: Flat paint in a bathroom (mold city) or high-gloss in a living room (shows every flaw).
The fix: Flat for ceilings, eggshell for bedrooms and living rooms, satin or semi-gloss for kitchens, bathrooms, and trim. Learn more about paint finishes.
4. Not Stirring the Paint
The problem: Pigments settle. Unstirred paint has uneven color.
The fix: Stir well before you start and occasionally while you work. If using multiple cans, mix them together in a big bucket.
5. Painting in Bad Conditions
The problem: Too hot, too cold, or too humid.
The fix: Check the temperature and humidity requirements on the can. Most latex paint needs 50-85°F and low humidity.
6. Thick Coats
The problem: Trying to finish in one heavy coat leads to drips, sags, and uneven drying.
The fix: Two thin coats always beat one thick coat. Be patient.
7. Removing Tape Wrong
The problem: Pulling tape off when paint is fully dry can peel paint with it.
The fix: Remove tape when paint is dry to touch but not cured (about 1-2 hours after the final coat). Pull at a 45-degree angle.
8. Ignoring the Ceiling
The problem: Fresh walls make dirty ceilings look worse.
The fix: At least consider painting the ceiling. It doesn't take long and makes a big difference.
Avoiding these mistakes doesn't cost extra money - just a little extra attention.
