7 Signs Your Drywall Needs Repair
How to spot drywall problems before they get worse.
Drywall damage doesn't always scream for attention. Sometimes it whispers. Here's what to look for before small problems become big ones.
1. Cracks
Some cracks are normal - houses settle. But watch for:
- Cracks that keep coming back after repair
- Cracks at door or window corners (could be structural)
- Cracks with one side higher than the other
- Cracks that are growing
2. Nail Pops
Little circles or bumps appearing on your walls? That's a nail working its way out. It happens when wood framing shrinks. Not urgent, but they look bad and should be fixed.
3. Water Stains
Brown or yellow spots usually mean water is getting in somewhere. This is urgent - the drywall might look okay but could be soft or moldy behind the paint. Find and fix the leak first, then deal with the drywall. See our guide on water damaged drywall: repair or replace.
4. Soft or Spongy Spots
Press gently on any suspicious areas. Drywall should feel solid. If it gives or feels soft, there's water damage or rot behind it.
5. Bubbling or Peeling Paint
Sometimes this is just old paint. But if it happens in bathrooms or near windows, moisture might be getting into the drywall underneath.
6. Holes (Obviously)
From doorknobs, furniture, kids, or whatever else life throws at walls. Any hole bigger than a quarter needs attention before painting.
7. Visible Tape or Seams
You shouldn't see where drywall sheets meet. If tape is bubbling, peeling, or you can see the outline of seams, the original installation or a previous repair wasn't done right.
What to Do
Small stuff (nail pops, minor cracks, small holes) is easy DIY territory. Anything involving water damage, large holes, or potential structural issues deserves professional attention. For nail pops, check out how to fix nail pops permanently. For small holes, see how to fix small holes in drywall.
Ignoring drywall damage doesn't make it go away. Small repairs now prevent big repairs later.
