How to Paint a Room in One Day

A realistic plan to finish a room from start to cleanup in a single day.

By Marc Dagher

Painting a room doesn't have to be a week-long project. With the right plan, you can finish an average room in one day. Here's how.

The Night Before

Do your prep work the evening before:

  • Move furniture to the center and cover it
  • Remove outlet covers and switch plates
  • Fill any nail holes with spackle
  • Put up painter's tape

This saves hours on paint day. See our full guide on how to prep walls before painting.

Morning (7am - 10am)

Start with cutting in: Use a brush to paint edges around the ceiling, corners, door frames, and window trim. Do the entire room before you start rolling. This lets the cut-in areas start drying while you work.

Late Morning (10am - 12pm)

Roll the first coat: Load your roller properly (roll it out to remove excess) and work in W-shaped patterns. Start at the top of each wall and work down. Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

Lunch Break

Let the first coat dry while you eat. Check your paint can - most latex paints need 2-4 hours between coats. This is a good time to clean your brush if you used oil-based paint for the trim.

Afternoon (2pm - 5pm)

Cut in again: Yes, do it twice. Two coats means two rounds of cutting in.

Roll the second coat: Same technique as the first. The second coat goes faster because you know the room now.

Evening (5pm - 6pm)

Clean up: - Remove painter's tape (pull at 45-degree angle)

  • Clean brushes and rollers
  • Touch up any spots you missed
  • Put furniture back
  • Reinstall outlet covers

Tips for Speed

  • Use good quality brushes and rollers - cheap ones slow you down
  • Keep a wet rag handy for drips
  • Don't overwork the paint - spread it and move on
  • Have everything you need in the room before you start
A 12x12 room is very doable in one day. Larger rooms or rooms with lots of trim might need two days. Be realistic about what you can finish.
