How to Match Wall Texture After a Repair
Tips for making drywall repairs blend in with textured walls.
The hardest part of drywall repair isn't filling the hole - it's making the repair invisible. If your walls have texture, here's how to match it.
First, Identify Your Texture
Common wall textures:
- Orange peel - Small bumps, like the skin of an orange
- Knockdown - Flattened splatter pattern
- Popcorn - Bumpy, usually on ceilings
- Skip trowel - Random curved patterns
- Smooth - No texture (lucky you!)
For Orange Peel
You can buy spray cans of orange peel texture at any hardware store. Practice on cardboard first. Spray from about 12-18 inches away in light coats. Let it dry, then prime and paint.
For Knockdown
- Use knockdown texture spray or thin joint compound through a hopper sprayer
- Let it set for about 10-15 minutes
- Lightly drag a knockdown knife or wide putty knife across the surface
- Let dry, prime, paint
For Smooth Walls
Sand your repair super smooth. Feather the edges. Use a bright light held at an angle to find any imperfections. Multiple thin coats of joint compound are better than one thick one.
The Secret: Feathering
Whatever your texture, the key is feathering - gradually blending the repair into the surrounding area. Don't create a sharp edge between new and old.
Sometimes You Can't Match It
Be honest with yourself. If the texture is:
- Very old
- Custom or unusual
- Heavily built up
You might not be able to match it perfectly. In these cases, consider retexturing a larger area - like an entire wall section - so the repair doesn't stand out.
Practice First
Always practice your texture technique on a piece of cardboard or scrap drywall before doing it on your wall. It takes a few tries to get the pressure and distance right. Before texturing, make sure to fix the hole properly first.
