How Often Should You Repaint Your Home?

A realistic guide to when different areas need fresh paint.

By Marc Dagher

Paint doesn't last forever. But how do you know when it's time to repaint? Here's what to expect for different parts of your home.

Interior Walls

Typical lifespan: 5-10 years

Factors that shorten it:

  • Kids and pets
  • Cooking without a vent hood
  • Smoking indoors
  • Cheap paint
  • Dark colors that show fading

Living rooms and bedrooms often go 7-10 years. Kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways might need it every 3-5 years.

Exterior Siding

Typical lifespan: 5-10 years

Depends heavily on:

  • Climate and sun exposure
  • Quality of previous paint job
  • Type of siding material
  • How well the surface was prepped

South and west-facing walls fade faster. Wood siding needs paint more often than vinyl.

Trim and Doors

Typical lifespan: 3-5 years

Interior trim takes a beating - handprints, furniture bumps, vacuum cleaners. Front doors see weather and constant use. Both usually need attention more often than walls.

Signs It's Time to Repaint

Don't wait for complete failure. Repaint when you see:

  • Fading or discoloration
  • Chalking (powdery surface, especially outside)
  • Cracking or peeling
  • Stains that won't clean off
  • Visible wear patterns

Money-Saving Tip

You don't have to repaint the whole house at once. Tackle one room or one exterior side at a time. Spreading it out over a few years makes it more affordable.

Maintenance Extends Paint Life

  • Clean walls gently once a year
  • Fix chips and scratches promptly
  • Keep humidity controlled
  • Clean exterior siding annually
Good prep work and quality paint can easily add 2-3 years to these timelines. Cutting corners costs more in the long run. When it's time to repaint, proper wall prep makes all the difference.
