Best Time of Year to Paint Your House

Weather matters more than you think for interior and exterior painting.

By Marc Dagher

Timing your paint project right can make the difference between paint that lasts for years and paint that fails early.

For Exterior Painting

The ideal conditions are:

  • Temperature between 50°F and 85°F
  • Low humidity (under 50% is best)
  • No rain in the forecast for 24-48 hours
  • Surfaces are completely dry

In Michigan, this usually means late spring through early fall. May, June, and September are often the best months. Summer can work, but avoid painting in direct hot sun - it dries the paint too fast and causes problems.

For Interior Painting

You have more flexibility inside because you control the environment. But there are still better times:

Good times: - Spring and fall when you can open windows

  • Any time you can run HVAC for temperature control

Harder times: - Humid summer days (paint takes forever to dry)
  • Winter when you can't ventilate well

Why Weather Matters

Paint needs to dry and cure properly. If it's too cold, it won't bond right. If it's too hot, it dries before it can level out smoothly. If it's too humid, moisture gets trapped and causes bubbling or peeling later. Learn more about how long paint takes to dry in different conditions.

Planning Tips

  • Check the 10-day forecast before starting exterior work
  • For big exterior projects, block off more time than you think
  • Interior work can be done almost year-round with proper ventilation
  • If you hire a contractor, book early - good painters fill up fast in prime season
The best paint in the world won't perform well in bad conditions. A little planning goes a long way.
